Last Saturday we did vocals for the theme song of the new Aga Mulach movie entitled Dubai... Star Cinema apparently banking on the success of the Piolo P and Claudine movie called Milan ... has done it again with this new movie.
The arrangement was done by Mon Faustino originally recorded on his Powerbook using Pro Tools LE on Mbox hardware.
It was nice seeing GV again... and we had a blast talking about our new gear, since he has the same Pro Tools setup in his house as what i have in the studio. GV once again proved that he's one of the best singers in the land by breezing through this song written by Ogie Alcasid. Singing with passion and precision as only Gary V could.
Today we recorded Tito Benjie whose last name i can't remember right now... he plays violin with PPO and is one of the best violin players we have right now. He provided the solo violin track you'll hear in the middle of the song.
Everything went well except that in the mixing stage Mon F noticed that his intruments sound dull compared to the brilliance and clarity of GV's vocal take... so we decided for him to bring his gear to the studio... mainly his Yamaha Motiff keyboard and his Roland Sound modules. Mon F is not really familiar with computer based sampling instruments yet and prefers hardware based modules for his sounds. Understandable since he uses his gear for live perfomances with his band Powerplay.
The song itself is a haunting ballad with lush strings and dark piano... very well orchestrated...which reminded me of another song we did before called Kailangan Kita incidentally another Aga Mulach movie. I even joked about GV being the favorite of Star Cinema when it comes to doing theme songs for Aga Mulach movies.
Oh and maybe tommorrow i'll tell you the title of the song.

I’m in pain! I didn’t realize that working out could be painfull… literally. It started out fairly easy, just a couple of minutes on a treadmill doesn’t seem like a hard thing to do, or so I thought… After a couple of minutes I was drenched in sweat… but I kept thinking this isn’t so bad… then came the stationary bikes and the weights presumably to use the muscles I’ve stopped using in my day to day activities, after which was cooling down back on the treadmill. All this was done under the supervision of my trainer who keeps telling me that famous line… “ no pain no gain” I guess the person who coined that phrase probably goes to workout as well.

The reason I’ve been spending a lot of time in the Gym is because Mixsonic Studios had ongoing repairs being done on the airconditioning and we had to shut down for a few days. But I’ve been told that tommorrows schedule with Gary V is pushing through. I wonder what it is were doing? I’ve done several albums for GV… my personal favorite was the Revive Album. I’ve always liked working with GV who I consider as probably the most experienced recording artist we have right now. He’s done albums in the US and has actually worked with American producers besides the numerous albums he’s put out throughout his career. Since nobody knows GV’s music better than GV himself, he also acts as producer and is actively involved in his album production.

And we could resume work on the new Sheryn and Erik album as well… I guess it’s back to work for me.

One thing about working in a recording studio, specially a digital audio production studio is that I have very little or no physical activity. Producers equate the long hours and working late with having a snack or a meal in between the actual work… I’ve probably tried all the take out food available within the vicinity of the studio … not that I’m complaining but thinking about what to eat usually takes up the topic of conversation outside of what we’re doing in the studio. It was a different thing altogether when I was still a musician … I had to carry all my gear and my clothes to the gig. I had to setup my gear and I had to endure the entire set which was around fortyfive minutes to an hour of which there was usually three sets a night. Whenever I do live shows or audio for a live show… there was a lot of walking involved as the Mix position was usually far away from the stage and there was a gazillion things you had to do and check personally to make sure everything went right.

Now in a studio environment… everything is kinda laid back… after all, if you do make a mistake when you sing.. you can actually start off from where you made the mistake and sing it again. When you’re in mix mode or actually start to mix the elements in the song all you have to do is listen really carefully and do small tweaks on the software on you computer usually with a mouse and keyboard. The work is more mental than physical.

I’ve been in the studio for almost two decades now...and I’ve decided finally to try to be more physical, thanks to my daughter Da and my friend Paolo Z who actually convinced me that I go with them to the Gym!!!

Strangely enough I’ve been afraid of going to the Gym for the longest time… probably because of all the good looking bodies one sees sweating it off on those strange contraptions making me the odd one out. Or maybe just the very thought of using those tiring machines scared me! Hahaha

Thus the quest for a healthier me begins…

I woke up early today... yeheyyy !!! would be nice if i can actually keep it up :-) and started the day by cleaning my PC... and now that i have broadband ( thanks to Globelines for their promo ) i decided to clean up the clutter around my PC . Had a quick lunch with Da my pretty daughter, who now works as a nurse in Medical City on weekdays, and after lunch, off we we went to PC Express in Mandaluyong... i love this place since they're open on Sundays to get a new printer for my son who has been complaining about my Kodak printer since the driver i got for it was in Japanese! and a Japanese ladies voice would sound out everytime one tried to print, not to mention the fact that the menu is in Japanese as well. Now that was a blast!!! I kept that printer because i thought the japanese speaking voice sounded like it was from an anime movie! hahaha but enough is enough so i had to replace it with the cheapest Epson i could find... hey! my son only prints text for his school work anyways and i do my printing at the office.
Then we went for groceries afterwards so i could get my sugarfree stuff... peanut butter... milk and cookies and my sugarfree iced tea. Darn!!! i bought the last bottle of sugarfree iced tea... oh man !!! hope they replenish their stock or i'd have to find a new place to get them.
We went to church and prayed that GOD will let it snow in the Philippines!!! Talk about miracles...I do wish we have one really Big change in our weather. This hot weather is really getting on my nerves... i hardly come out of my room anymore when i'm at home!!! But at least families bond together when you insist that only one aircon be turned on in the daytime, you can expect everyone to be in that same room. :-)
Going broadband is really cool though... i could surf the net while the kids talk on the phone at the same time. Now if i could just get the darn thing to recognize my laptops LAN port...
So after all this... we got home and i started the tedious process of putting my PC back together again and after about an hour i got it done... My desktop now has two 80 Gig drives and a new printer to boot.
Now if i could just find time to organize the stuff in my room ....

We actually finished the Singles album a few weeks ago ... but since we've been busy doing the Search for a Star in a million album , i was pleasantly surprised that they were doing an album launch at Dish. Thanks again to my wonderfull friend Jamie for the invites.
The album was produced by Civ Fontanilla for Star Records and features four artists in one album similar to the concept of the Solo Album series which featured new upcoming male singers in one album... this time it's the girls turn. We were hoping that it wouldn't end up being called Sola... the female version of Solo... now does that make sense?
Finally they've decided to call it Singles which features ... Maoui David, Marinel Santos, Karell Marquez and Aliya Parcs with four songs each for a total of 16 cuts on the Album.
I arranged one song for Karell and played guitars on a couple of songs as well.... besides mixing for the whole album itself.
Maoui had the fun and youth oriented songs... as Marinel had the ballads... Karell, did the alternative or Band sounding songs... and Aliya of course had the Acoustic element in her choice of songs.
In working with an album concept like this ... i had to treat each artist as individual as their musical styles suggested... kinda like working on four short albums compiled into one. I ended up mixing songs by the same artist first rather that doing one song after the other... since we had to keep one artist songs sounding different from the next. It would be interesting to see which one among them would actually be the first to come up with a solo album. :-) but that would be a different story.
